PRP Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma, commonly known as PRP, is a complex composition of cellular components that, when prepared properly, can be used to heal and repair a host of injuries and conditions such as:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Accident related pain
  • Chronic back pain (pain persisting more than 12 weeks)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Sciatica
  • Sports injury
  • Overuse injuries
  • Herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or radiculopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee arthritis
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Meniscal tears
  • Tendon injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Cartilage injuries
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Whiplash injury
  • damaged ligaments
  • cartilage and tendons
  • Rotator cuff Injury
  • Peroneal tendonitis
  • Aesthetics
  • Osteoarthritis including knee, shoulder, hip joint, and ankle
  • Hair loss
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfers elbow
  • Facials

Through a simple blood sample, your Simple Men's Health provider extracts these cells from your blood and places them in a centrifuge to isolate a high concentration of platelets and growth factors. This PRP concentrate contains 3 to 5 times the normal concentration of the platelets and growth factors that are used in the body’s own healing process.

Platelets are the most important component of PRP. They are full of growth factors and are key to the proliferative repair of damaged tissue by stimulating cellular growth, differentiation, proliferation, and healing.

Growth factors (including TGF-ß, bFGF, PDG Fa-b, EGF, VEGF, CTGF), which are attached to platelets in your blood, are hyper-potent proteins that are instrumental in allowing your body to heal from injury and repair damaged tissue. Your provider injects the platelets into the affected area to stimulate regeneration.

What does platelet-rich plasma therapy treat?

Simple Men's Health uses PRP therapy to address a wide range of chronic conditions, injuries, and trauma. Some of these include:

  • Arthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Ankle/knee pain
  • Muscle injuries
  • Shoulder/elbow injuries
  • Erectile dysfunction

Additionally, if you've recently undergone surgery for an orthopedic issue, your provider may recommend PRP therapy to speed up your recovery process.

What are the side effects of PRP?

Most people who receive PRP therapy experience little to no side effects after the procedure. This is because PRP uses cells from your own body. As a result, there's minimal risk that your body will reject them.

Some people do have inflammation and pain around the injection site, but generally, the discomfort isn't severe enough to disrupt their daily activities.

When does PRP start working?

The success of any PRP treatment depends on the quantity and concentration of platelets. At Simple Men's Health, the team offers patients a new generation of PRP, called Clinical PRP (C-PRP), with a superior platelet recovery rate of 75% to 95%, 7 to 9 times more powerful platelet factors released than a basic PRP.

The high-quality C-PRP used at Simple Men’s Health helps to reduce the inflammatory response in the injection area. However, if you do experience any inflammation, this should fade within a few days.

Patients may require 2-6 injections spread over some time; some will notice considerable improvements after within an injection or two. In most cases, you should start noticing results from your PRP treatment within 4-6 weeks.*

After your treatment, your doctor will usually design a recovery plan for a few weeks to help the tissues heal quickly. This includes doing some sort of physical therapy and avoiding physical activity or straining the tissues. If the first session hasn't produced effective results, you can schedule follow-up treatment sessions 4-8 weeks after the first one.

Repeat treatments are entirely safe, as the treatment itself doesn't involve the injection of an artificial substance into your body.
